Award Show Bedlam! D&AD, Marketing Awards winners announced
Hello ladies. Look at the award shows. Now back to me. Now back to the award shows. Now back to me. Notice something? Yes, Wieden + Kennedy Portland and Old Spice are still cleaning up at the big international shows. They’ve just picked up not one but two very rare Black Pencils at the 2011 D&AD Awards today, not to mention three Yellow Pencils, two Nominations, and two pieces they figured would be good enough to throw in their upcoming annual.
Just so you don’t think that the entire prestigious London based award show smelled like Isaiah Mustafa, there were others who also won the coveted Black Pencil: @radical.media won one in the Web Films category for “The Wilderness Downtown”, that crazy Arcade Fire video they did with Google Creative Labs; Samuel Wilkinson Design for designing ‘Plumen 001′, which is the most awesome lightbulb on earth; JWT New York for its hauntingly effective Human Rights Watch installation; and Apple, who wins a Consumer Product Design Black Pencil for just about anything they come up with. Of course, this time around it was for the iPad.
All in all, 53 Yellow Pencils were awarded this year, and the 2011 Students of the Year Award (held as part of the Professional Awards for the first time this year) went to Christian Asmar, Manu Manceda and Virginia Feito of Miami Ad School, Madrid. You can check out all the results right here.

Here in the Great White North, the 2011 Marketing Awards, representing the best in Canadian advertising, went down at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto last night. There may have been more anticipation for the evening’s Game 7 Stanley Cup match than for the show itself, and while the Vancouver Canucks lost the game, that city can take some pride in the fact that Best In Show was won by Van-City shop TBWA\Vancouver, oops I meant Trees & Rocks, oops I meant Station X. The agency that has had three different names since March won with “The Warden Sixteen”, a campaign for the Vancouver International Film Festival that we featured here in The Inbox last fall.
Agencies who need significantly bigger trophy showcases after the evening include Leo Burnett Toronto and Montreal’s LG2, who won ten trophies each. Other big winners include Toronto’s John St. and Montreal’s CloudRaker, who took home respective top honours in the brand new Social Media and Branded Content categories.
