Award Show Bedlam! Tomorrow Awards Shortlist, D&AD, Cannes Lions
The Tomorrow Awards announced the 2010 Spring Session shortlist this morning, a list created by hundreds of Public Judges who voted on the work over the past few weeks.
The Public Judges shortlist is made up of 49 entries from thirteen different countries, and includes gems from many different companies, from small digital boutiques to multinational agencies.
Top Countries:
USA: 17 entries
Brazil: 8 entries
Sweden: 5 entries
While everyone who made the shortlist deserves a heavy round of applause, they won’t have too much time to soak in the adulation; the shortlist is now in the hands of the Monster Judges, who will be meeting in New York next week to deliberate and decide which entries are the best of the best, and worthy of a Tomorrow Award.

The 2010 D&AD Awards were held last night
Australia and South African agencies took home their nation’s first Black Pencils, as Sapient Nitro (Brisbane) and TBWA\Hunt Lascaris (Johannesburg) were awarded at the ceremony. The Black Pencil is one of the most elusive prizes in advertising, given out to only the most groundbreaking work in advertising and design.
Sapient Nitro won two Black Pencils for ‘The Best Job in the World’, while TBWA\Hunt Lascaris took home a Black Pencil in Graphic Design for the ‘Trillion Dollar Flyer’ – the campaign that turned money into a medium to promote exiled newspaper The Zimbabwean.
‘The High Line’, almost 2.5km of Inner City Park built on a section of a former elevated freight railroad in New York City, was created by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and awarded a Black Pencil in Environmental Design. Apple continued its winning streak at D&AD with a Black Pencil in Websites for Apple.com.
Acclaimed director Spike Jonze won the D&AD President’s Award 2010. Ol’ Spike himself actually has six D&AD Yellow Pencils to his name, dating back to 1995 and his video for Weezer’s “Buddy Holly’.
Forty-two Yellow Pencils were also awarded to work that set new standards in creative excellence. You can see all the work right here.

The 2010 Cannes Lions Festival is just over two weeks away — the ihaveanidea team is picking out their swimwear as I speak — and Andrew Dobbie of JWT Manchester UK and Rachel Wolak of Crispin Porter + Bogusky USA, have good reason to be shopping for sunscreen, as they have won the Young Lions 48 Hrs YouTube Contest viral ad competition to promote WaterAid. Andrew and Rachel will become ‘Team YouTube’, the 40th team to compete in this year’s Young Lions Film Competition.
The competition received 530 entries and over 75,600 votes in two weeks. A panel of worldwide creative leaders assessed the quality of the ads over the last week and selected Andrew Dobbie and Rachel Wolak as the winners based on the overall creative execution of the brief and the videos’ public votes. They will now unite as ‘Team YouTube’ and will receive an all expenses paid trip to Cannes and join 39 other teams from around the world to compete in the Young Lions Film competition.
Here’s Andrew’s piece:
And Rachel’s video.
Congrats, and we’ll see you at the Gutter Bar!
