The story continues: BBDO Chile is caught scamming for Sony
I’m not even sure what the ad means, but a BBDO Chile ad for Sony PS3 featuring a 21st century video gamer giving a blood transfusion to famous Nazi Field Marshal Edwin Rommel is out there, and like all things featuring Nazis not being bludgeoned to death by basterds, it’s offending people. And much like the DDB/WWF “Tsunami” ad that made the rounds on an international walk of shame a few weeks ago, its creation was not exactly on the up-and-up.
But unlike the DDB situation, where the execs did a lot of fancy footwork, first completely denying, then blaming others, then finally accepting responsibility for their campaign, BBDO is coming right out and admitting their guilt. Says Cristián Lehuedé BBDO Chile’s Executive President:
This creative design did not involve and was never approved by Sony Computer Entertainment or Sony. This “mock campaign” was developed by BBDO Chile staff and was submitted to various creative competitions/festivals without prior notification or approval from SCE/Sony, and it is not representative of the views or advertising policies of SCE/Sony. BBDO Chile apologizes for using this creative concept without authorization or prior approval, and for its misrepresentation of the PlayStation brand and its values.
We’re sure that the award shows it was entered to will be revealed in the coming days, and we’ll have a whole new round of tersely worded warnings from the festivals.
The 2010 award show circuit is gonna be mighty interesting.
