What if James Dean didn’t die in a car crash on a lonely strip California highway that fateful September afternoon in 1955? Would he have gone on to become a successful film director, an even bigger race car driver, a horse rancher,  a famous humanitarian… or would he have just bit the dust three years later at age 27, as is custom for young, troubled legends?

Cape Town agency King James decides to go with the former possibility in this spot for South African investment firm Allan Gray. The ad meticulously creates an alternate future for Dean, using a lookalike actor who ages well beyond the star’s real-life expiration date, accomplishing many remarkable things. The idea? Imagine what could happen if you had more time.

Of course Allan Gray invests money, not raise the dead. While beautifully shot, the ad does make me think, wouldn’t your sound future investments be for naught if you life was snuffed out in a flash like Dean’s? Fortunately most of us don’t live as close to the edge as he did.
