Getting your fifteen minutes of fame, along with a t-shirt which reads "YoungGun of the Month - Fuckin' Talented" is as easy as clicking here and submitting your work.

YoungGun of the Month (Student) - October 2008 - RUNNER-UP
Name:
Don Connell
Naeem Walji
School:
Humber College, Creative Advertising BAA
Location:
Toronto, Canada
Craft:
DC: Copywriter
NW: Art Director
Name of Client:
Swiffer
Name of Entry:
Floors So Clean
Favorite campaign of all time:
DC: It may never have been a campaign, but I would be remiss if I neglected to mention John Caples’ mail order masterpiece for the U.S. School of Music (“They Laughed When I Sat Down At The Piano”). I had the tremendous good fortune of Caples’ ad being the first true long copy advertisement I ever read and thank goodness. Caples’ piece is engrossing, powerful and conveyed to me almost singlehandedly the infinite potential of copywriting in the advertising medium.
NW: The Sears Christmas hugs campaign, which has been running for a couple years. I’m not sure which agency created it, I’m not even sure if its won any awards. I love it because it effectively tells a story of what many families hope to experience during the holiday season. It's that key insight and emotional benefit that I think makes this campaign so great.
If you weren't in advertising what would you be doing?
DC: Hopefully making music. I like to think I’d be very happy playing my guitar for dimes on a street corner near you. Matter of fact, you might still catch me doing that. Only now I’m asking for quarters.
NW: Trying to get into advertising.
In 100 years what is the one thing you'll be remembered for?
DC: I’d love to be remembered for being 122 years old. Since that isn’t going to happen though, I hope that when I retire I have at least one campaign to my name that someone feels is worthy of being in an advertising textbook, so I might inspire another student some day.
NW: After 7 years of postsecondary school, and a very large student debt, I think I’d be remembered for my eagerness to learn, or my ability to dodge my creditors.
Best way to procrastinate
DC: While it might sound slightly backwards, I believe the best way to put off doing something (particularly something that requires creativity) is to do something that’s still creative, but is only peripherally related to what you’re trying to put off in the first place. That way, you still feel a sense of having accomplished something, even if you complete nothing of actual value. I’ve written almost an entire album worth of original songs to put off writing a 30 second jingle.
NW: Just hanging with some friends enjoying a randomly picked beer that no one has heard of.
What one word would other people use to describe you?
DC: Caffeinated
NW: Passionate
Who inspires you creatively? One person from the advertising industry, and one person from outside of the business.
DC: I hate to be “this guy”, but there are honestly too many people in the advertising industry for me to choose just one. Paul Lavoie, Ignacio Oreamuno, my professors (definitely my professors) the list goes on an on. As far as outside the business is concerned there’s no contest, it has to be my fiancé. I’ve always believed that there is nothing more important in the life of a creative person, then someone who is willing to listen to your ideas and give you 100% honest feedback. They’re one in a million and if you find one, be sure to hold on to them.
NW: At this point, it would have to be my professors. They’ve inspired me to grow personally, professionally, and most of all creatively. Outside of that, generally the people I interact with on a daily basis. When given a brief, we have to look somewhere for direction on how to talk to the target, what messages will they respond to, or not. I draw on the people around me for these insights in order for my creative to be effective.
Do your non-industry friends and family grasp what it is you do?
DC: Absolutely, because I won’t stop talking about it.
NW: A lot of the time I’m still referred to as a designer, but my friends and family are beginning to see the thinking that goes into a project before actually executing it.
What's your favorite medium and why?
DC: I can say without a doubt that while I definitely love something about every medium, I have always had a particular fondness for guerilla advertising. To me, guerilla represents unlimited potential. When anything and anyone can be (or take part in) an ad, then our only restraint, our only boundary, is our creativity. Oh, and my apologies to anyone who just moaned.
NW: My favorite medium to execute on would have to be print. I feel it’s like the Art Directors domain. My favorite medium to come up with ideas for is Guerilla, which I also think is the most challenging. It’s about finding a possibility within a medium that no one else sees, that’s what really intrigues.

If you could live in anywhere in the world, besides where you're living now, where would you live?
I was born and raised in Guatemala, where I would spend my weekends at a lake called Atitlan. It would be a beautiful place to live.
If you weren't in advertising what would you be doing?
My passion for communication arts is broad. I like advertising just as much as design and photography. I would work hard to succeed in any of those industries.
If you ever have kids will you encourage or discourage them to get into the business?
I would encourage them to pursue their own passions, although I would love for them to share mine.

Welcome to the first of what is going to be a regular feature on here on ihaveanidea: the YoungGun of the Month winner's profile.
This honor is awarded every month to professionals and students by your friends at the YoungGuns International Advertising Awards. Currently winners are being selected by the very talented Josh Lancaster of Colenso BBDO Auckland.
Entries are accepted on a monthly basis. The rules to enter are quite simple for the professionals: at least one member of the creative team must be under 30, the ad must have run that month and scam/ghost ads are not allowed. And it's even more simple for the students - just send in your best work.
And best of all, it's free to enter. Winners receive the respect of their peers, bosses/future bosses, an official certificate and a "YoungGun of the Month - Fuckin' Talented" t-shirt.

Favorite campaign of all time?
Ogilvy Canada's New and Improved Diamond Shreddies. It's fun, it's self-mocking, it makes me like cereal.
If you could live in anywhere in the world, besides where you're living now, where would you live?
LA. Everybody there looks happy.
Favorite YouTube video?
There's one of me being punched by another writer in Miami. Other than that I don't spend too much time on the site.
What one word would other people use to describe you?
Awesome. I think.
Who inspires you creatively?
One person from the advertising industry, and one person from outside of the business. Outside of the business would be easy, Aimee Bender, fiction writer. Killer work. Inside, I'd have to say David Droga, he's the most likely to make me laugh with an ad.

TDA did a poster for Cannondale mountain bikes years ago. It was just a q-tip with mud on it, but that one ad started a chain of events that led me to ad school. And I second Zac's pick, Diamond Shreddies is my kind of humor.
If you could live in anywhere in the world, besides where you're living now, where would you live and why?
I grew up in Ohio, so it's going to take some time before California loses its shine.

What one word would other people use to describe you?
At the moment, nocturnal.
Who inspires you creatively? Name one person from the advertising industry, and one person from outside of the business.
