Under the threat of brainstorms!

Getting our feet wet

We are about 2 weeks into the first quarter here at MAS, and the assignments are starting to build up. Don't get me wrong, it isn't anything mind-blowningly overwhelming (yet), but enough to keep me busy.

There's two classes I'm taking right now that I really enjoy more than the others because they have more to do with thinking, creating, writing, etc. One is our Brainstorming class. At the beginning of each class, we do an in-class exercise to warm up our brains. So far, the exercises have ranged from writing for thirty minutes about anything, to creating all the ideas we can on starting a new theme park. I really like throwing out ideas in a big group format, because it allows us to build on each others' ideas, and that way we come up with some really cool stuff.

The other class is my Copy Techniques class. This class is the one so far that we've actually been assigned to come up with actual ad campaigns. Our first assignment was to come up with 3 different ad campaigns with three print ads for each campaign concept. The product was Diet Coke, but we weren't allowed to use a diet concept (i.e. nothing about diets, calories, fat free, etc). We had to advertise Diet Coke based on taste, refreshing feeling, etc. We presented our campaign ideas in class, and I seemed to get pretty good feedback. I was real happy with what I was able to come up with, and think they are something that I can actually produce and try to put in my book and into award shows (eventually, when we actually start doing production work on ads)

This week in Copy Techniques, we got an assignment to do the same thing we did this last week but with a gym company called Fitness Together. We get to work in groups this time and in our first brainstorming session for ideas, I think we can up with some pretty strong concepts.

I honestly cannot wait until we get to the point, hopefully, in this quarter, but maybe next quarter in which we start actually producing our work with the art directors here using Photoshop and Illustrator.
