HOW TO BE INTERESTING
Posted by Brendan on Wed 3 Sep 2008 at 05.02.00 pm
Here is another sidebar from IDEA INDUSTRY a book written by Brett Robbs & Deborah Morrison. It's a great read for anyone pursuing a career in advertising and especially for those unsure of exactly where they'd fit into the agency environment. It offers a number of great little side bars written by industry pros. There were a few that I enjoyed so much I wanted to share them here. And lucky for us, our friends at The One Club (the publisher) gave me the okay to republish some of them. HOW TO BE INTERESTING Russell Davies, Planner...

A Passion for Ideas that Can’t be Killed
Posted by dothisdontdothat on Thu 28 Aug 2008 at 05.24.00 pm
I’ve been gone for a while. I’ve been dead to the world. I took my work back underground and got buried in freelance. Then they wrapped me in a flag and pocketed the pennies and just like that: I was gone. I’ve left Hong Kong. Who knows for how long? And I’m now your ex-Copywriter in Asia.  Unfortunate family circumstances brought me back to Canada. So I’ve been down in the lab, with a pen and a pad, mixing up the medicine and thinking about the government. But now I’m back from the dead to the land of the living,...

Long Time No Talk
Posted by Matthew Weiner on Thu 28 Aug 2008 at 07.11.00 am
Hey everyone.  Sorry it's been so long since my last post and sorry I'm going to keep this one short and sweet. I just accepted a job and will be starting in less than a month.  I'm the newest Interactive Copywriter at an agency which will remain nameless until a later date. Also, I just launched my website.  Check it out at http://bigween.com/ and let me know what you think.  I'm still working out the kinks and I'd appreciate as much feedback as possible. Thanks.  I'll try and get back to writing on here on a more regular basis. ...

Just another American
Posted by Michael on Wed 27 Aug 2008 at 11.31.00 pm
It’s strange to see other Americans walking the streets of Zacatlán.  It’s just not a tourist town.  When I see another American walking the streets my eyes light up, and I am proud to see living proof that people of my kind still exist.  They’re not just mythical figures I type to in e-mails – for all I know everyone back home could have been replaced by robots. Usually I want to talk to these other Americans and get to know them.  Because there is something comforting in hearing your native tongue come from someone other than yourself.  Normally if I...

HOW'D YOU GET IN: Neil French
Posted by Brendan on Wed 27 Aug 2008 at 12.13.00 am
We're pleased to announce a brand new regular feature here on ACADEMIA. It's called 'HOW'D YOU GET IN' and it'll be a bi-weekly column that will focus on a well known Creative Director and how he/she got into the business. Those of you who've been around for a few years will remember that I had a pretty interesting story about breaking in, but I've got nothing on the likes of Neil French, Luke Sullivan, Ty Montegue and Lee Garfinkel - all of whom will be featured in upcoming installments of HOW'D YOU GET IN. They'll be joined by top Creative...
