| HOW'D YOU GET IN: Neil French Posted by Brendan on Wed 27 Aug 2008 at 12.13.00 am | |
| We're pleased to announce a brand new regular feature here on ACADEMIA. It's called 'HOW'D YOU GET IN' and it'll be a bi-weekly column that will focus on a well known Creative Director and how he/she got into the business. Those of you who've been around for a few years will remember that I had a pretty interesting story about breaking in, but I've got nothing on the likes of Neil French, Luke Sullivan, Ty Montegue and Lee Garfinkel - all of whom will be featured in upcoming installments of HOW'D YOU GET IN. They'll be joined by top Creative... | |

| YoungGun of the Month • July Posted by YGAward on Tue 26 Aug 2008 at 10.48.00 pm | |
| Welcome to the first of what is going to be a regular feature on here on ihaveanidea: the YoungGun of the Month winner's profile. This honor is awarded every month to professionals and students by your friends at the YoungGuns International Advertising Awards. Currently winners are being selected by the very talented Josh Lancaster of Colenso BBDO Auckland. Entries are accepted on a monthly basis. The rules to enter are quite simple for the professionals: at least one member of the creative team must be under 30, the ad must have run that month and scam/ghost ads are not allowed. And... | |

| Comedy Script Posted by Aron Tipton on Tue 26 Aug 2008 at 10.34.00 pm | |
| Recently, we had to tell a story based on a random visual in our Brainstorming class. My visual was that of a female boxer. Not one to do an assignment within the normal guidelines, I decided to write a short excerpt of a sitcom script instead of a narrative. I have posted the scenes I wrote in hopes that someone might comment back and give me a small bit of confirmation that I have the ability to write humorous material that not I alone believes is funny. Enjoy! [Interior] A New York City apartment {Open} Mark enters the apartment and goes... | |

| It was an interesting summer. As many of you that read my blog are aware, it’s been a while since I posted. This summer, work slowed down. As an independent businessman, this year was much different than last. I have heard from several in different parts of the industry (and other industries) saying they were extremely quiet. Right down the line…printers, staffing companies, photographers, etc. That ugly "recession" word is being thrown around. Many (including myself) spent the summer hustling to bring in some new work or to find the next gig. I have always compared this to going fishing. It doesn’t matter if... | |

| EVERY ASSIGNMENT, EVERY DAY That insight was supplied by arguably one of BrandCenter's most demanding professors during orientation. At the BrandCenter, we're assigned a decent amount of work, but it's staggering how much work & time is required to complete a seemingly simple assignment. Everyone frets over time management and the ever-elusive feeling of "Balance." Don Just told us straight up, the only way to maintain a reign on it is with, Every Assignment, Every Day. Ordinarily, I, like many others I assume, work only on whatever subject is due. Rarely have I tried to dedicate some time towards subjects with... | |

| How to be an asshole without trying. Posted by Michael on Sat 23 Aug 2008 at 12.01.00 am | |
| Unless you’re one of those gifted people I envy (and secretly hate at the same time), moving to another country is the best way to learn another language. You have to jump in, make an idiot of yourself, and be willing to just roll with the punches. When I moved to Mexico, I had to make ends meet somehow, so I began teaching English. Many people ask me, “That’s pretty easy, right?” No. It’s not. If you don’t believe me, try explaining the difference between “to make” and “to do” when your current vocab level is no higher than a kindergartener’s. One... | |
