The junior I hired might be being primed to replace me — HELP!

Hi Jancy, I am an intermediate/senior level creative working in a small agency. I had previously hired a jr. on to help out with some tasks. Over the past year that this jr. has been at the agency, he/she has completely changed roles, taking on the same title as I and I am no longer in charge of his/her role at the company.
Could this jr. be replacing me? I feel like I am no longer being viewed as a valuable asset, despite my years of experience. The jr. lacks the experience and knowledge to fill the role properly and has lost clients in the process. Should I be looking elsewhere?

intro The junior I hired might be being primed to replace me — HELP!There are a lot of holes in your story that makes it hard to give a thoughtful answer. A basic question: is the junior person’s work outstanding? Is this why he or she leapfrogged ahead? If so, advancement is appropriate, though it’s true, being promoted above one’s abilities often bites them in the ass later. Going into another job with a title they can’t actually deliver on is a classic dilemma. The boss giving the promotion is putting the agency and the up and comer at risk, perhaps for a short term goal of retention. If this fits your picture, you may be in a position to watch a series of problems unfold some day soon. Your focus shouldn’t be on the co-worker, but on your own career health. Regardless of the mysteriously huge promotion, the time is right to ask for time with your boss to get feedback on your performance. Even if you’re not due for a performance review, events prompt you to want a reality check, so go for it. Depending on what you hear, you’ll know if it’s time to start looking.
