Will not finishing ad school hurt my chances to work in the US?

Hey Jancy,
I’m currently interning in Canada as an art director. I have 1 more year of school, but am hearing mixed advice. Some are telling me to go back to school, especially if I one day want to work in the US. They say degrees make it easier to get a VISA and Degrees are much more important in the U.S.
Just as many are telling me not to finish school. It’s about your book, and that I’m ready to start working.
Will not finishing my degree close opportunities in the US?

intro Will not finishing ad school hurt my chances to work in the US?You don’t mention why you wouldn’t want to finish school. That last year is usually the most intensive, and is the biggest push to get your portfolio into shape. Never mind missing a shot at a U.S. job (and yes, having a degree could be an asset with immigration); you won’t get a Canadian job without a great portfolio. If your book is already impressing some people you’re working with now, that’s great. But it only stands to get better with another year of focus on it in school, and to say this business is competitive is an understatement. Could you skip the last year and do just fine? Maybe so. But with just one year to go, and a degree that may come in handy some day, our bet is you’ll be glad you made it to the finish line.
