I was shortlisted at Cannes — should I ask for a raise?

Hello Jancy,
A TV spot I did got shorlisted for Cannes this year.
It didn’t win, but the fact it made it that far is amazing considering how conservative the client is (who was totally amped at the nomination). There have been slaps on for the accounts guys, but so far my CD hasn’t talked to me about it (she’s new). Everyone keeps telling me that I should get a raise or something out of it. What’s the protocol?

intro I was shortlisted at Cannes — should I ask for a raise? We’ve judged at Cannes so we know first hand what an accomplishment it is to make the shortlist. You’ve beaten out a mountain of work from around the world and you should be proud. It’s a great credit on your resume and it does enhance your value, though not as much as a Lion would—that’s a whole other level of miracle.

Perhaps your new CD is reluctant to heap praise on “close but no cigar.” As great as the accomplishment is, she may feel it’s sending the wrong signal to appear satisfied with less than a medal. In any case, it wouldn’t appear to be translating to a raise (and we wouldn’t give one ourselves, short of a statue. We’d be very happy for you and thrilled to see your potential, and have high hopes you’ll keep ramping up.) It would be a mis step to approach her seeking the compliment, with your hand out.

We’d be patting you on the back and encouraging you to keep shooting for the top. Consider this a virtual high five, and be hopeful you have a new boss with very high standards. That means good things for your career.
