Portfolio schools are too expensive! Can I skip them?

Are portfolio schools really necessary?
I’ve looked into going, but, for one they are way too expensive! And only the loans offered are private loans at ridiculous interest rates.
I want to break into copywriting, and currently work for a small niche agency on the client side.
I’ve been creating spec work just using publisher and a little bit of photoshop.
I’ve heard of people becoming copywritiers just based off drawings with clever headlines.

intro Portfolio schools are too expensive! Can I skip them? It’s true, many have become writers without a formal advertising education. But your chances in a highly competitive field of going that route today are slim. Certainly in the case of what we think of as the good jobs. Today the job calls for far greater ability than writing headlines. You will need a much deeper understanding of how to communicate with people who don’t want to get your message, and who have the ability to dodge it with ease. The copywriter who will be hired understands a complicated landscape and how to work in many channels, from endless online spaces to in-store and beyond. A great writer is a great problem-solver, who can look at a client challenge and respond with ideas that may not be copy-driven. Maybe the answer is a new product, or an event.

We encourage you to see a good portfolio school or other advertising program as a smart investment that will make you employable. Your current strategy is very limiting.

I learned more about advertising in my 1 year at CPS than my 4 in college. Jancy knows her stuff, apparently.
