My spec work is better than the real work my agency has me doing — HELP!

Hi Jancy,
I’m a junior copywriter and I’ve been around for about a year and a half. I’ve got myself into a full-time gig at an agency that talks a good game, but I STILL haven’t done any REAL work that’s book worthy!
If I want to impress other CDs, I should be doing work that isn’t spec, but the real work the I do (the opportunities I get), just doesn’t impress.
Can I continue to work on my book outside of my job and hope that spec work will land me somewhere more promising? Or am I doomed to travel the path I’ve already set down?

intro My spec work is better than the real work my agency has me doing — HELP!18 months in, you should be doing work you’re proud of. We believe in being proactive, and spec work can be a way to demonstrate what you’re capable of. But that spec work can come from your agency’s client list. Talk to people in account services about what their clients’ problems are. They may not have a project on the go, but that doesn’t mean you can’t think about solutions to their big picture problems. Show your CD unsolicited ideas for existing accounts and you may find they give you more opportunities. If not, at least you’re building your portfolio, and in another few months perhaps it’s time to start looking. The other possibility here is that you don’t have a partner you’re having a good experience working with. This is a common factor in not getting to great. If that’s at play, honest discussion about what would work better in the partnership is in order.
