I’m getting burnt out from building my book!


Hi Jancy
I just graduated from Humber College’s postgrad copywriting program and I have been hunting for an internship for the past two months. I felt my portfolio wasn’t strong enough yet when I finished, so I’ve seen a few senior copywriters and a few CD’s to get their feedback to improve my book. I’ve been told I have a lot of potential & my book is much better than when I left school & to also keep working on it. But now I’m feeling burnt-out & losing my passion from working full-time as a receptionist, visiting agencies and working on my book. I’ve done the whole write down ideas and walk away for a bit and do something else process. But I’m starting to want longer breaks from that too. When I wake up in the morning, I used to be excited to work on my book. Now, not so much. I’m scared to take a break because I don’t want to miss out on opportunities but at the same time, I dread working on my portfolio. Any thoughts?

Seeking feedback on your work from professionals and pressing on is a smart way to keep evolving the book and to become the one the CD wants to hire. You’re burnt out for obvious reasons. It’s hard to do a full time job and then another, harder job, afterwards. However be assured this is a pretty typical reality after school, and don’t be so sure your dread of all this work means you’re not cut out for it. It’s very, very hard to get that first job. Nancy’s department head always said after the first one, the rest seem easy. We hope you’ll take a deep breath and keep at it. You, like countless before you, will have war stories about breaking in. We think you’ll make it.
