How can I move from social media to copywriting?

Dear Jancy,
I graduated last year with a business degree (finance) and a minor in English. I’ve started working in social media marketing for a company and I am wondering what the most sensible next step is to transition into a copywriter or just simply get my foot into the ad agency door? I cannot at this point in time say I am 100% certain I want to become a copywriter and I’d like to get as broad of an exposure as possible. Will my current writing experience (content writer for FB/twitter/blogs/corporate website) enough to get me in the door? Do I absolutely need further education (portfolio?!) or should I go around shops to offer my free labour i.e. internships?
Thank you for your time and I appreciate your career advice and insights.

intro How can I move from social media to copywriting?Your social media experience sounds like an excellent calling card. At this moment in time, there may not be a better one. So ring that bell. Most agencies have social media, all of them need it. You seem to have the goods that would make you worthy of consideration. It’s actually great time for writers in agencies; once you’re in the door, and earn your stripes, there are all kinds of possibilities. If you commit to wanting to be a copywriter, a strong portfolio of ideas that showcases your skill and talent is still key to being hired. You can build it by going back to school, or develop it while working as a social media person in an agency with the help of those around you. Internships are a great way to learn. Not sure how many agencies offer social media internships, but there are bound to be some. Hope for a paid one. It’s painful to go from salary to no salary.
