How can I show my boss that I’ve got more drive than the other interns?

Dear Jancy,
I am currently one of three interns vying for a junior creative position at a big agency. I want this so badly. I’ve been working on my folio/spare briefs/young creative comps at night and on weekends and asking my CDs for feedback, really trying to get my work out there and noticed. The other two kids clock off at 5 and say “they are really passionate” but I KNOW I’m 100% more committed to this. How do I get my CDs to see this and make sure I’m the one they eventually choose?

intro How can I show my boss that Ive got more drive than the other interns? An internship is a heck of a long audition, isn’t it? But it’s the chance to grow and develop, and a creative director wants evidence of that growth. When a CD is trying to choose among a few different people, he or she looks for a number of things, first among them – ideas that show you have “the stuff” to do the job in the real world, not just in school. Followed closely by hard work, pitching in, pro-activity, getting and giving help. From your note it sounds to us like you’re doing it all.

CDs see a whole lot more of what’s going on than you might suppose. They usually know who’s doing what, where the ideas are coming from and how much elbow grease is going into it.

You might want to ask whichever top dog is doing the hiring for a portfolio review, including the work you’ve done for them. Take a deep breath, have a frank conversation about where you stand and let them know what you want. Which is to turn the audition into becoming a full-time cast member.
