Making the move from USA to Canada: what do I need to know?

Dear Jancy,
I am a Sr. Art Director living in the US, but thinking about a move to Toronto. I have a few questions pertaining to the possible move and wanted to know if you could help.
The first question revolves around a U.S. Citizen working in Canada. What is the process when it comes to applying for a work visa, and does that sometimes throw a wrench in the process?
My second question has to do with salary. If I’m making say 95K in the states, what should I ask for in a city like Toronto? I’ve been digging for answers on the net, but have been unable to find a salary comparison chart that helps answer this question.
Any thoughts and suggestions you have on this would be awesome.
Thanks!

intro Making the move from USA to Canada: what do I need to know?Nancy came to Canada from the U.S. in the 80′s. To come up you will need a job offer from an agency that will help you get a work permit with their promise of a job. You also need to fit the criteria of what kind of professionals Canada lets in, which changes from one year to the next. You would need to work with an immigration lawyer here to navigate the waters. Instead of seeing this as a big challenge, Nancy just took it a step at a time, and actually got in pretty quickly. The timing can vary. As for what salary to ask for, you should check out the cost of living in Toronto compared to where you live now, and factor in the 13% HST tax on many purchases. Income tax is higher, but you get a lot in return. Canada has a vastly superior health care system (we’re still stunned by the tenacity of many Americans to hold on to a broken system, and the disinformation flying around about Canada’s system. Watch “Sicko”. Discuss.)

Ultimately, you will either find the trade-offs are worth it, or not, financially. The currency is more or less equal right now, though historically the Canadian dollar is lower. You might make more or less: like anywhere, the better you are, the higher the salary you’ll command. Yes the cost of living is generally higher. But you might find the quality of living is also higher. Check it out.
