Employment limbo: I quit my job before the next one was confirmed. HELP!

Dear Jancy,
Last week, I got an offer from the largest agency in Taiwan (hooray!) and then I resigned from my current agency.
Today, I got the letter saying they won’t proceed because the former creative director (the one I interviewed with) left.
Got stuck in the employment limbo.
What should I do at this point?

intro Employment limbo: I quit my job before the next one was confirmed. HELP!Ouch! First, as a matter of course, you should impress upon the agency that just withdrew their offer that you’re now out of a job, they made an offer and you’d like to meet the new CD to discuss the situation. Of course you’d like the opportunity to show the new person your work; if he has never met you, why assume you aren’t to his liking. If that’s not an option, legally you’re not really in a position to press it. One hard lesson here, is never resign from a job for a new one without a signed contract. Had you had one, they would have no choice but to either bring you in, or give you some compensation for breaking the contract. (If you do have a contract, review it with a lawyer to follow through on getting compensation). The next question is, did you like your last job and leave in good standing? Maybe they would keep you on. Approach your former boss honestly and if you truly feel you can still show up with passion for their job, perhaps he’ll consider all the benefits of keeping a proven employee over a new hire. But the final food for thought: if you didn’t like your old job, this may be opportunity disguised as disaster. Don’t try to return to an unhappy situation. Start looking for another job today.
