Getting back in the writing game after a rough start

My first job out of school was as a Copywriter at a big agency, but after a couple of years, the stress of client demands and uncertainty in my job began to eat away at my confidence, and I made a premature decision to quit. After some freelancing and a short stint at a boutique agency that I left due to some mean-girling (I was young, I treated work like high school and let them get to me), I was just so turned off by the agency world. I then went on to the client side for a few years, even trying my hand at communications, but none of it measures up. I’m passionate about creative writing, I even started my own blog as a release from the daily corporate grind, but I realize now how much I miss Copywriting. Do you have any advice on how I could crawl back into the industry with my kind of resume?

intro Getting back in the writing game after a rough startYour resume sounds pretty good, actually. It’s a plus to have diverse experiences. Now you’ve seen life from the client side, very valuable. You’ve got a blog going, a great writing exercise. Some people have turned good blogs into a full time career, as you probably have noticed… Meanwhile it sounds like you’ve done some growing up. It’s all good, you just have to choose to look at it that way. So show up for interviews with confidence that you actually have a good story. You bring fresh perspective, new insights to the party thanks to your experiences outside agency life. Hopefully you have continued to build your portfolio. If not, get to it. Show you do have the passion by including up to the minute work, it doesn’t matter if it’s not produced work. Preferably, thinking that reflects today’s needs in the creative department: media-neutral ideas that tackle big problems with solutions that could be, well, anything.

It’s great that you now know what you want. We don’t see any real barriers to getting there.
