The recession stalled my career’s creative output… now what?

I’m a copywriter and in an attempt to get more exposure to television and mass media, I moved to a “underachieving” agency promising to make it big again.

Shortly after I arrived, recession hit and creative progress went out the window in exchange for financial stability.

My career has stalled. I feel I’ve lost three years. I need to move on but I’m getting the impression no one wants to hire someone who seems to have made little impact in three years.

What do I do?

intro The recession stalled my careers creative output... now what? Those three years still came with experience and lessons, so don’t despair. Just move on. You may need to show ideas in your book that didn’t get produced. That’s fine. It’s also fine to acknowledge to CD’s you interview with that you didn’t have the experience you had hoped, but fall short of crapping on your agency, which is just bad form. Ultimately you need to take responsibility for staying too long in a job that didn’t suit you. One way to get in to that next job is to keep your salary request modest. It may be the price of course correcting.
