Is the traditional portfolio dead?


Greetings Jancy,
First of all I want to thank you and ihaveanidea for being such an important resource to those of us in the advertising industry. I can’t begin to count how many times I’ve flipped through my copy of Pick Me!
I have a question that wasn’t addressed in Pick Me, probably because it wasn’t that big of a deal back when you wrote it, but now I have to ask:
Is the traditional portfolio dead?
Do you still receive physical portfolios sent to your office, or is everything digital these days, with PDFs, personal websites and iPad apps? Should a creative have his or her work in both formats, or can they bypass the traditional book? Does a beautifully put together book make you think the person knows his craft, or are they automatically seen as archaic ?
I suppose there is no right or wrong answer, but I’d love to hear your thoughts.
