I was gonna work in the ad industry, but then I got high…

Dear Jancy,
I don’t know if you have been asked this before and I feel like a tool even asking, but I can’t really find an answer anywhere else. I know that most large companies use pre-employment drug tests. Does this hold true for most ad agencies? If offered a position at an ad agency will I likely be subjected to a hair or urine drug screening before I could begin work? I’m no drug addict, but as a creative-minded youth sometimes we find it enlightening to release with a simple joint now and again but I don’t want jeopardize my chances of getting hired. If you could enlighten me as to whether urine or hair tests (and specifically which) are typically used by most agencies I would be quite grateful. Thank you for your honesty, I just don’t know who else to confide in regarding this sensitive subject.

intro I was gonna work in the ad industry, but then I got high...This is the best Ask Jancy question ever. Ad agencies are more likely to require that you test positive for drugs. No, no tests. Our industry is a long way from being anything like the government, or your mom.

Our agency certainly doesn’t require a drug test. BUT, one of our clients, due to the nature of their business, does.
