I want to be an AD, but I’m no computer whiz

Dear Jancy,
I recently graduated from UCF this past December and have taken to looking at Portfolio Schools for art direction. I’ve zeroed in on VCU and MAS as my top two, but looking over the applications I am feeling a sense of panic. I want to show them my best work possible, but I am not proficient in InDesign and my Photoshop experience tends to revolve around subtle changes to pictures and altering colors (thanks to my photography background). How do I prove that even though my software knowledge is lacking, I have the talent to succeed in this field?

intro I want to be an AD, but Im no computer whizIf you’re concerned about it, why not dedicate time to learning both and you can note to the schools that you’re taking steps to be up to speed very soon (if in fact they even require it). Learning software is unrelated to talent. What really counts to schools is the way you think. First and foremost they want to see you have the potential to have strong ideas. Don’t feel bad that your portfolio isn’t uber-slick. If it shows you have taste and interesting approaches to problem solving you’re going to be considered seriously at any good school.
