How do I go about looking for an internship?

I’m a 3rd year advertising student at my university but I’m having trouble finding internships. What’s the best way to approach looking for internships? Are there any good websites that list internships? Even if a company does not have internship information on their website should I e-mail them anyhow? Also what do people expect an intern to have? Should I even have a book yet? Sorry for so many questions, I’m just a very confused college student.

intro How do I go about looking for an internship? We only tap new grads for internships, typically, with a few exceptions. Most agencies expect their interns to be able to contribute straight away. It is undeniably a learning experience but there is also a desire and need to bring in people who are poised to contribute creatively and understand strategy. Too early in to your education would mean more teaching than most places are prepared to offer. Most agencies offer internships, many year round, and of varying lengths. CD’s will be looking for very strong portfolios, and usually choose people they would have hired for a full time junior position if they had the opening. They don’t normally advertise openings for internships. Just start calling around to inquire. It sounds like you’re not prepared yet to go for these positions— if you don’t have a portfolio, definitely not.
