Moving from PR in the UK to the ad world in Canada

I’ve been head of press at one of the UK’s biggest music charities for the past three years, before that I was an account manager at a leading arts PR agency.
We live in interesting times for media campaigns: gone are the days of write-a-press-release + few-boozy-lunches = pg 9 of The Times… The campaigns I develop are acutely audience specific and outlet through diverse spaces. I create events, websites, concerts, exhibitions, online communities, photoshoots, vlogs, commission design, run DM campaigns… all to develop brand profile – all under the banner of PR.
My question is this: in an age of such eclectic communications, is there a difference between the workings and output of a modern PR office and its big brother in the Ad world?
I ask with a personal interest at stake: I love the creative aspect of my job, but am moving to Canada this year, where I expect my little black book of UK contacts will be rendered useless to the domestic market.
With good references and a bit of gall, can a PR chap start again as an Ad man? Doesn’t matter to me if ‘Junior’ is in the title…
Cheers from rainy London

intro Moving from PR in the UK to the ad world in CanadaIt’s a great time to be in PR—with renewed relevance to ad agencies who have a big need for PR partners as they create efforts for clients that will only work if amplified by PR. Think of virtually all of Droga5′s famous work (Mark Ecko Air Force One tagging stunt, Million Phones, Tap Project etc.), last year’s blockbuster “Best Job in the World”, our own Dove Evolution. Without great PR none would be the famous case studies they became. Today’s biggest success stories look less and less like traditional media communications. We think you’ll find your skills put you in demand in Canada. A lot of ad agencies will put out the welcome mat as they look to bring PR capabilities in house. An interesting time.
