Two years out of school, still no job. What do I do?


Where do I go from here?
I graduated May 08 with a BS in Advertising from the Texas Creative program, all set with a portfolio to start my career.
Naturally, my timing was bad with the economic climate. I’ve been doing my best to wait it out and have done a few internships to keep myself up to date. But it’s been over two years now and there is still no one hiring here in Austin, TX.
Really, I just want to do the work. I’m happiest when I’m creating campaigns and it’s killing me that whatever talent I have is just being wasted.
So what do you think I should do? My family situation kind of prevents me from moving to another city. but I’ve contacted all the agencies here and interned several places and every one tells me my portfolio is strong, but they just aren’t hiring right now. I don’t know where else to go from here. I’m willing to do other art or design or strategy related work but haven’t been able to find any. I didn’t think I would have to wait this long.

intro Two years out of school, still no job. What do I do?A lot of people find that first job can take quite awhile to materialize. It is too bad that your family circumstances prevent you from checking out other markets. You are in a relatively small community that reminds Nancy of her days in Baltimore. Not a ton of options. With successful internships and good feedback on your work, we’re thinking you might try to land some long distance freelance. A strong presentation of your work online could be all a CD needs to consider you for freelance–especially if you make an initial offer that’s impossible to ignore (like, 50% off first job). Leverage connections with alumni that have landed in good spots in other cities to get a foot in the CD’s doors. Create a strong email pitch (a great subject line is key) to CD’s you’d like to reach. It may not be first choice to work on your own over the computer and phone, but lots of people do it. We hate to think of your talent going to waste eating Cheetos and watching Oprah. And do keep calling the locals every few months (it really can come down to right place right time).
