I found me a mentor… now what?


Hello Jancy,
I am a first year advertising student in a 3 year college program. We recently took a tour of an agency, and after picking up Pick Me, I was well prepared for the Q&A period.
At the end of the tour, the AD asked if I would like to meet the CD, which I agreed. She explained to him that I was one of the people that ‘stood out’, and that we should talk. I told him how driven I was to get into copywriting, and even talk about a few assignments I was working on. He shot them down, stating that they have been done before, and encouraged me to dig deeper. I was humble, and took his advice.
After our meeting, he handed me his business card and asked me to show up anytime before his day started and show him my work.
Question 1- My book currently does not exist yet, so how should I proceed?
Question 2- Should I be afraid to show him my work and mess up?
Question 3- Should I dog him after every copywriting assignment I have? Or should I start to write copy myself, and see him every two weeks?
Basically, how do I proceed?!

intro I found me a mentor... now what?That’s a wonderful creative director. Be sure to take him up on his offer, an exceptionally generous one for a first year student. He is prepared to be a mentor to you, which is fantastic. This CD understands where you are in your development; given the invitation we suggest that you do call when you have something you’re feeling great about. His feedback will be an excellent augmentation to your professor’s. However we are sure he wasn’t thinking this would be twice a month. Wait until you have some thinking you’re excited about, and really have something for him to react to. From there he’ll give you cues as to how often he’s thinking you should call. In his shoes we would not expect to see a budding writer more than once a quarter, but he may surprise you.
