Making the jump from Ireland to Canada

Hi Ladies,
How are you both?
My question is: Has advertising in Canada been affected by the recession as bad as other places in the world?
I’m from Ireland. Things have been fairly bad here. With dramatic budget and job cuts, the realm of advertising here has suffered big time. I luckily kept my job. Due partly to the fact I’m a junior and cost less to hire.
But I handed in my notice a month ago. I took the plunge. Applied for a working visa for Canada. Got it. And I’m jumping on a plane in December.
Am I nuts?
Are agencies even hiring over in Toronto now?
And if so, is someone who is not Canadian even going to be hired?
What do you suggest I do to overcome these obstacles?

intro Making the jump from Ireland to CanadaGood for you. “Leap and a net will appear”. Canada hasn’t been hit as hard as many other countries, but times aren’t great. Good talent is always in short supply, in good times and bad. If you have a great portfolio, you’ll get a job. It will be a matter of being in the right place at the right time. It’s a good time to be a junior, as you have heard. We’re huge fans of junior talent and it is indeed a help that the freshest minds come with a small price tag. As for not being Canadian, as you have a work permit that isn’t an obstacle. Good luck and welcome to Canada.
