Full time creative job vs. internship at a dream agency?

Is it crazy to take an internship at a great agency over a full time position at good agency?

I graduated from a portfolio school a few months ago, and have just been offered a full-time position. But one of my dream agencies would like me to take a paid 3-month long internship, it’s one of the top shops in the States and doing quite well in this tough economy. But  they can’t guarantee if there will be a position available when the internship ends. What should i do? Accept the real job and start paying off student loan? Or take the internship and hoping i would be hired.

Thanks,

The Deeply Confused

intro Full time creative job vs. internship at a dream agency? In a perfect world, we’d take the internship at the great agency. Learn from the best, get their name on your resume, assume that’s a great foot in the door going forward even without a full-time result. If you have a mountain of debt driving your choice, it’s perfectly understandable that you’d go for the ‘sure thing’. If you can take a deep breath and go for the 3 month experience, we’d still bet you’ll do better in the long run. We have seen that first job experience set the tone for entire careers. Maybe it’s
the safer choice after all.

Absolutely go for the best opportunity possible. This not only helps to set your expectations for yourself, it establishes your personal brand with peers and employers. Shoot for the stars and worst case, you’ll be comfortably gazing down from a lunar recliner.
