MAS over VCU for someone who lives, works in Miami?

Dear Jancy,
I currently work as a marketing manager in Miami, Florida. I am looking into breaking into the creative side of advertising, and as such I am considering both VCU and Miami Ad School. The appeal of MAS is that I can stay in Miami and (hopefully) take the coursework at night while continuing to work during the day. (Do you know if this is possible?) My main questions are: Do you think there is a benefit to studying in the city where you will ultimately be seeking employment, in order to network and meet locals in the industry? Or is it realistic to think that I can go to VCU and get a job offer in Miami?

intro MAS over VCU for someone who lives, works in Miami? They are both great schools, and as a successful grad of either, you’d have considerable advantages over competition to land a good job in any city. All things being equal, there can be an edge to the local option because you will have opportunities to interact with local agency leaders along the way and making those connections can indeed be helpful. The hours you’ll need to put in may make keeping a full-time job almost impossible, so do investigate and be clear on what’s realistic. Your ideal choice seems clear. The runner-up is awesome, too. They’re both tough schools to get into; go for it.
