Looking to get experience before I graduate

I am an aspiring copywriter currently in college for advertising, and I am in search of internships/volunteer positions within Canada, however my graphic design/art direction skills aren’t up to par. I am having trouble getting even considered because my lack of “book” My question to you, how would an aspiring copywriter get a chance (unpaid) to make his mark in the advertising world? Thank you.

intro Looking to get experience before I graduateWe only give internships to grads. We find that any sooner, people just aren’t ready to be thrown in the deep end (that’s how we use them—with assumption they can hit the ground running). So, part of your problem is likely that you simply don’t know enough yet to be helpful to most ad agencies. As an aspiring writer, we don’t expect you to have design skills. We give writers a break if their work doesn’t look great—your quality of thinking matters most. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have strong design and art direction skills on your side. If you know an art director that can help that’s ideal. Meanwhile concentrate on developing big ideas and the writing craft; many CD’s will keep their focus on the right thing when they evaluate your work.
