Will my stuttering leave my chances sputtering?

As I’m finishing my 4th and last year in the Advertising program at OCAD, I’m also in the process of applying for the Miami Ad School’s 2 year portfolio program. What sends chill down my spine is the fact that I stutter. I’ve been stuttering since I was a kid. I wouldn’t say I’m a heavy stutterer, I’m able to communicate my ideas and manage conversations, and during presentations I might get few blocks here and there but I’m able to carry on with presentation, and my stuttering have not created any setbacks in my years at OCAD so far. But what terrifies me is the fact soon I’ll be entering a business that demands lots and lots of communication skills.
How much of an effect do you think my stuttering will have on the agency life or the client meetings? Have you ever met someone the ad business who stutters? Or even, do you think someone like myself will have any hope in becoming a great Art Director?

intro Will my stuttering leave my chances sputtering? You can absolutely make it as an art director with a stutter, and if you make a point of presenting regularly, even just internally, to your partner, account management and creative director—we wouldn’t be surprised if it helped decrease your stutter. Years ago we worked with a guy named Mike Lipkin. He was an account director with a stutter. He’s gone on to become a world class motivational speaker and author. (google him and you’ll see a long list of his accomplishments). There are countless examples of highly successful people who have overcome stuttering, and no reason why you can’t be one of them. Remember too that when a CD is hiring someone, the main thing they look for is talent. Many people have tons of talent but for various reasons aren’t ideal presenters. This can be worked around. However, again, there’s likely big opportunity in tackling presentation skills. Go for it.
