Moving from IT to the ad world

I completed a masters in information systems two years ago but I really have no interest to work in IT. After, I was fortunate enough to do a course in marketing and advertising (diploma level) only to find that I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately getting an internship let alone a job is turning out to be impossible as I don’t seem to come up with award winning ideas like the rest of the aspiring gang. My question: whether I need to do a degree in advertising so as to acquire more concrete skills because my main problem is that I love ads and the connection one has with a good ad but I am not sure if I am pursuing something that I am not destined to do.

intro Moving from IT to the ad worldYou have a relevant and interesting background as advertising is making a massive shift to the online space—going where people spend most of their time (vs tv, print, other traditional places all ads used to appear in). Many of the top talent in our industry have both sides of their brains working. So who knows, maybe ads are your destiny. But having said that, getting more training so you can learn how to create a portfolio that will get you a job seems critical to success. If you’re really passionate about it, better to shift gears now and work towards being happy. We’ve just answered several questions today about what to look for in a good school, so we won’t repeat ourselves again. Just check out the other posts from today. Good luck, hope you go for it. These words are hanging in the air: “Choose the right career and you’ll never work a day in your life.” (Actually if it’s advertising you’ll work your ass off. But you take our meaning.)
