Can a pysch. degree get me in the ad business?


I recently finished a psychology degree here in Canada, and am very interested in finding work with an ad agency. Am I out of luck without some more industry specific education? I don’t have a ‘portfolio’ nor do I know exactly what it entails. I have no problem at all starting from the bottom and learning the industry from the inside. Do you think I have a shot?

intro Can a pysch. degree get me in the ad business?That’s a great background to bring to the party, but no, you don’t stand much of a shot getting a job at an ad agency to learn from the inside. Those positions are filled by people who have spent years learning how to do very specific jobs that aren’t generally taught on the job. If you want to become an art director or writer, you will do best, typically, to go to a school with a strong advertising program. There are 2 year, 4 year, and masters programs out there. You could start your research by looking at the best, schools like VCU Brandcenter and Miami Ad School. You can also learn about becoming a “planner” at both of those schools, a job grounded in developing strategic insights rather than “creative”. Do some research into advertising programs and see how it’s all looking to you when you better understand the industry and channels you might pursue to become a part of it. If it’s still looking exciting to you, choosing a school that fits your needs will be next.
