Splitting with a good partner to switch cities

I’m an art director who’s been in the industry for a few years now. In that time I’ve been partnered with my fair share of writers. Some good, some not so good.
Now, I think I’ve finally found ‘the one’. We’ve been partnered for a couple of years and we still get along great. Everyone likes our dynamic, and best of all, we produce great work together.
Here’s the issue: I want to keep growing my career and move to New York. He only wants to stay in Toronto. Should I stick with this person and find bigger/better shops in TO? Or should I be thankful for the time we’ve spent together and hope that my next partner in NYC will be just as good? What do you advise?

intro Splitting with a good partner to switch citiesIt seems a bit early in your career to rule out moving to a great city because of your partner. We’d suggest that you go ahead and interview in New York. Then, if you get offers, you can weigh the merits of the new place against the strength of your partnership. If for instance you wouldn’t be paired with a partner you feel great about (and do insist on meeting the potential partner and spend some time with them as well as share portfolios) you should think twice. Equally, a good partner at a shop not as good as your current one is questionable. So…if you can land at a better agency with a partner you have a good feeling about, go for it. Don’t go to NYC just to be there. For your career to advance and avoid a setback, you need a good job.
