Getting hot again after a lukewarm overseas stint

Five years ago I was considered a creative with a hot book. Then I went overseas for a vigorous dream job, which turned out to be a disappointment, but still a personal adventure yielding B+ work. When I came back to the U.S. I was startled to find out that the experience didn’t hold much weight, and that my work is now seen as years out of date.
Our industry moves fast, but I actually consider myself a better creative, a better creative director and a more inspired person for having done something different.
What is your advice?

intro Getting hot again after a lukewarm overseas stintSounds like no regrets on the move so no need to feel bad about going for a great experience. Different markets have different ideas about what great is and maybe you are caught at the moment at a disadvantage. So if you’re hearing “out of date”, what will it take to get back on track? Do you get the current landscape? Like it? Want to be part of it? Demonstrate you can create work that belongs in today’s awards books and edit out the dated work. That’s not done with the wave of a wand but you can do it. (And here’s a hint: your new work shouldn’t be in traditional media.) Go after some small accounts, preferably with a partner who you respect and start putting new work into the book. Go to ad events that can give you insights into the latest trends and developments you’ve missed. There are lots of them (check the calendar of events on this site). Make like a student and immerse yourself in the ad sites like Creativity online and see where we are now. Pay the hundred bucks to subscribe. And pay nothing for and this very site. Talk to as many people in the industry that you respect as you can for their insights and feedback. You haven’t lost your talent. As long as you still have your drive you can get back in the game.
