Can a designer’s book land me an AD job?


I’m a recent graphic design grad, interested in becoming an AD. If you are interested in working for an ad agency does your portfolio work have to be strictly ads?
My portfolio isn’t specific to advertising, it has some logos, package design and some ads. I have plenty of ideas for ads and was wondering if I should spend the time working on them for my portfolio, or should I show advertising ADs and CDs my graphic design work. My work shows that I have design skills, and ideas that could be tailored for ads. I don’t want to waste their time, but I don’t want to waste mine either. Not that it would be a waste of time, just that it takes time and I’m anxious to start work. Thanks for the advice.

intro Can a designers book land me an AD job?We’re not sure we get why you want to switch to advertising after just completing a design degree. They’re overlapping but hugely different disciplines and you demonstrate with your statement “I…have ideas that could be tailored for ads” that you don’t know what it takes to do an ad, yet. If you truly feel inspired to move into the ad world, expect a need for more education. Yes, CD’s expect a portfolio full of ads, not design projects, to be convinced of your ability. You can’t (generally) get there from very limited exposure to advertising courses.

If you’re eager to start work, we assume that you’re far better poised to get started in a design job that you’ve been trained for than an art director’s position. Check out student work on a few of the best portfolio school websites like VCU Adcenter and Miami Ad School to get a sense of how far students will go to get a good art director’s job out of school. It should be a reality check on where you are now vs. what you would want to strive for.
