Illustrator wants to become graphic designer

I am 27 and already have a BFA in illustration. In the 5 years I have graduated I haven’t been able to make the ball get rolling on illustration jobs. I have been thinking of going back to school to get a second BFA in graphic design. I have friends who are working graphic designers who say that would be a waste of my time and money. At my age school will only set me back and the only true way to learn is if I apply myself on my own time and work hard to get real life experience not more schooling (which didn’t do me much good to begin with). What do you think about this?

intro Illustrator wants to become graphic designerDesign is an exciting field and it’s odd to us that you were given a blanket statement that going to school to learn design would be a waste of time and money. The fancy BFA degree goes further than you need to go. But go to school you must, if you want to become a designer. It’s not a self-taught gig, requiring mere hard work. Your illustration education is no substitute for the ground you need to cover in design education. There are many good schools out there— start looking at school websites to see who’s putting out the best graduates and investigate your options. If you find you’re excited by the possibilities, we hope you’ll go for it. Many people wisely step back from a path that isn’t working and make sacrifices in the short term for long term happiness. It’s never easy but can be well worth it.
