I realized I’d make a better suit

I just read your book and have realized I was meant to be a suit. I do not have the art or writing background to be in the creative department, but I think I have the analytical qualities and marketing background to be a junior account exec. So far, it seems just as hard to enter the industry for us suits as it is for the creatives. Any advice on how to get in as a suit?

intro I realized Id make a better suitYou got that right, sister. It’s just a crazy hard business to get into no matter how you look at it. Obviously, you want to be setting up appointments with senior account managers if you can. Asking for an information interview is often the best way to be invited in. They probably don’t interview when they’re not hiring.

How about this? Get them to want to meet you through what you send them. For example, put together a tape of work that you like. Chances are you’ll wind up needing to tape off your TV or snap photos of ads on the subway, but that’s ok. Canadians do some really good work. Then, along with your resume, send a note explaining why you like the work you’ve chosen. Demonstrating passion for what you do is a great way to stand out. And as with any ad, getting noticed (for the right reasons) is the first order of business.
