No women recognized at Agency of the Year?

After the whole Neil French fiasco a couple of months ago, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on Creativity magazine naming Crispin agency of the year and running a cover photo that doesn’t include one woman from their creative department. Personally, I think this photo speaks volumes about this industry and the male oriented humor that wins awards.

intro No women recognized at Agency of the Year?Crispin richly deserves to be recognized as agency of the year. Right now they’re miles ahead of the pack. It’s depressing that they have no women in the creative department, but they aren’t alone in their status. Alex or Chuck would have to tell you why there aren’t any women there. Senior women aren’t a lot of places, for a lot of reasons. Lack of talent isn’t one of them.

We hope that the one positive thing that can come out of the Neil fiasco is more discussion in this industry about where all the women go. It’s not like our business is overcrowded with geniuses and has no room for the brains of half the population. And with 80% of the purchasing power of consumers in female hands, it would be helpful for female perspective to make its way into more boardrooms and creative director’s offices. Our industry lags far behind the progress of others. The first step is to understand far more fully why that is. Meanwhile, as women who have spent most of our careers at agencies that don’t seem to have much gender bias, we can only suggest one sure way to avoid the problem is to work where it isn’t an issue. That might mean leaving your current job, or turning down the offer from the place known for being a boy’s club. Working in a place where you’re treated as second rate may be a sure path to becoming exactly that.
