Should I stay clear of alcohol (or related) spec ads?

I’m a copywriter putting my book together, just about to start sending it out. I have some great ads done for a wine glassware company. Now, I’ve heard it said repeatedly that you should stay away from alcohol ads in your spec book, such as beer ads and liquor ads. I read Pick Me in September and may have seen the same advice there also. Anyway, does this advice apply to glassware companies as well, or only to alcohol-providing companies such as Budweiser, Stolichnaya, etc.?

intro Should I stay clear of alcohol (or related) spec ads?Hmmm…we don’t remember that rule; and really don’t think there’s a word about it in Pick Me. Perhaps you heard that in the context of advice to avoid doing spec for brands with already notoriously outstanding, famous campaigns (like Bud. At least part of their work is genius). You are unlikely to do better, and could look a bit lame for trying. You’re absolutely in the clear in the “glassware” category.
