I’ve worked on one account in six years

Man, am I stuck. I work at a top-rated shop. Unfortunately, I’ve been working on the same account for 6 – that’s right – 6 years. I have a ton of great, award-winning work to show for that account, but very little for the others (the accounts aren’t very good). I really want to get out, but my book has suffered from a severe lack of growth, and my job hunting has been rough. A lot of the other work is from my last job. I always got a good response, not to mention this enviable gig, but now not so much – at least not from the places that will be productive for me. I’ve really lost perspective on my book, and I think I really screwed myself by sticking around and hoping something would come up on the other accounts. I’ve been doing a lot of spec on the side – and people like the work – but that doesn’t seem to be doing the trick. I’m really sick of it here, so I’m thinking of just quitting and trying freelance. If nothing else, at least there will be a change. Bad idea?

intro Ive worked on one account in six yearsTime to move on. Get out there and breathe in fresh air again. You will probably need objective eyes to edit your work. Don’t make the mistake of favoring your oldies that won big but haven’t aged well. Don’t be afraid to show the spec. If that’s all that demonstrates the other tunes you can sing, they’re important. Also, it’s so important to get moving, don’t let a pay cut stand in your way if you have a good opportunity with a disappointing salary. You have stalled and your value is dropping steadily. You can pull out of the dive if you kick yourself out that door. Advertising can be fun again, somewhere else.
