A case of first job jitters

I am starting my first internship soon. I have only been out of school for a few months, but I still feel a little unprepared to jump right into agency life. While I have been working on ads almost constantly over the past while, I know there’s more to making your mark than just that. What are some of the ways you would suggest for making an impact and settling in comfortably? Thanks.

intro A case of first job jittersYour first job is always scary. We won’t pretend that it’s not. But work is an antidote to all that anxiety. A little concentration goes a long way and when you have your first ‘sold’ piece in your hands, you’ll suddenly feel all that fear and pressure drain away. Until the next project.

So how should you make your mark? In our experience nothing works better than coming up with a good idea. After all, you’re now in the business of making ads. But you can add gold stars to your name in a variety of ways. Be helpful. Get involved in as many projects as you can. Come up with as many ideas as your hard-working brain cells can manufacture. (Apparently, hard-working brain cells breed more brain cells so the job should get easier as you develop them.) Is there a summer party in your office? Do the internal publicity. Do the agency Christmas card. Who cares if it’s July? It could wind up in your portfolio.

The more you feel like you’re contributing, the better you’ll feel about being there. But don’t worry too much about the oxymoron of impact and comfort. Keep doing ads. They’re the mark you need to make.
