Mastering the art of the schmooze

I hate schmoozing at industry functions. I feel like I don’t know how to do it, and every time I try to chat someone up I feel like such a fake because he/she knows the only reason I’m even talking to them is to advance my career – and we both know it . However, as juniors, we’re told that it’s a necessary part of the business and that it’s all about who you know.
So, I guess my question is: How does one master the art of the schmooze?

intro Mastering the art of the schmoozeIf you figure it out, let us know. We felt just as awkward as you when we were juniors. Even now, it’s far from our favourite part of the business and one that we sometimes avoid. Nancy’s a little better at it than Janet. She’s also a little more outgoing. It would be fair to say that Janet has never fully mastered it; she’s just lived long enough to know who she wants to talk to and who not.

If you’re not a natural ad-party animal, let time help you out. The longer you work, the more people you’ll know. The more people you know, the more people you’ll like. The more folks you like, the less you’ll dread that whole scene. When you stop feeling like you’re using people, you’ll stop feeling like a fake.
