I wish my job was “all idea, zero execution”

I’m a creative person with the title ‘associate creative director’. I can illustrate, art direct, and my Creative Director says I am developing a real talent for writing, creatively and strategically. But I like to focus on one project at a time. I ‘ve had enough of jumping around from project to project. I am currently pursuing an MBA in business, and I’d like to do electives either in human resource management, project management or IT.
The thing is, I’m at a point in my career that I think I need a change to a career that I can just come up with the ideas and give them to others to execute, and I just steer others in the right direction. I’m tired of the nitty gritty of actually ‘doing the heavy work’. How realistic are my chances of creating or finding a new career that provides this kind of opportunity?

intro I wish my job was all idea, zero executionBoy, what a puzzle. We’re a bit confused by your many apparent abilities that don’t seem to link up with your ambitions. In general, folks who can illustrate, art direct and write don’t want to work in H.R., project management or IT. You sound like you’re very betwixt and between about what you want to do when you grow up.

Certainly, in our world, there’ll never be a job where you get to come up with the ideas and other people execute them. We seriously doubt that you’d ever find an ad agency in Canada where anybody works on one thing at a time. (It’s more common in the U.S. to work that way, but a lot people find that boring.)

It’s clear that the job isn’t doing it for you and you need a change of some kind. We would suggest you decide what you enjoy doing most, then pursue businesses that allow you to do that. It’s time for you to get some focus or you’ll just stay stuck.

Good luck.
