Moving to Canada: hot shops and salaries?

I have enjoyed myself working as a copywriter for the last ten years, working in agency’s like McCann-Erickson, Bombay, and currently for an agency in Muscat (where I am a Consultant Creative Director). I have applied for immigration to Canada (the process is almost complete now) and am quite excited about making a home here. Could you tell me what the salary scales are like for copywriters in Canada? And also which are creatively, the top ten agencies?

intro Moving to Canada: hot shops and salaries?Welcome to Canada…may the ad scene treat you well. Now take a deep breath. It won’t be easy to get a job (for you or anyone else). What city are you moving to? That will impact the answer to the salary question, as well as how much experience you have, and how strong your portfolio is. It will help if you have some international awards. That will get you interviews faster.

A junior copywriter might start at $28,000 (in Toronto), an intermediate salary up to $70,000 or so, and a senior salary can go up to maybe $110+, before you start looking at what the title of Group (or Associate) Creative Director can mean. We know some Group Heads making up to $250. (Interesting when you consider Creative Directors salaries in Toronto start at around $200).

The hot shops in the latest awards books are Taxi, Zig and PJDDB in both Toronto and Vancouver. There are many good shops worth checking out: Leo Burnett, John Street, Bensimon Byrne, Maclaren McCann, and of course we’ll have to list our own, Ogilvy. That’s an abbreviated list and Toronto-centric. Let us know where you want to live and we’ll try to get you pointed in the right direction.
