Breaking in as a commercial photographer

I’ve just graduated from the Photography program at the Alberta College of Art and Design…I’m looking to do work for advertising agencies. I’ve been getting a lot of great feedback on my portfolio but getting ACTUAL JOBS have been hard to come by…any advice?

intro Breaking in as a commercial photographerIt’s always challenging breaking in. We suggest you seek the advice of the established photographers who are doing what you want to do. They’ve lived it, in your market. Many of these people are generous with their advice and sympathize with what it’s like to be in your shoes. Have you considered assisting for someone you respect? It’s a common way to get started. You can obviously learn a lot from a talented professional and that slot has been the springboard for many great people. It’s also smart to pick the brains of art buyers at the agencies/ heads of print production. They will also be happy to give you their thoughts. You may get a lot of insights on how to see the senior art directors who could be giving you work, as well as getting on the radar screen of these people who often give suggestions to them when they’ve got a job to shoot.
