How, why have you stayed at one shop?


How do you ensure your position for such a long time…I hear people complaining about not staying at an agency for long. Why is that? ’91 is very long time how’d u guys do it? What advice to you have for a young co-op student hoping to become an account exec. some day?

intro How, why have you stayed at one shop?No one can actually ensure staying anywhere for a long time. Certainly the better places are only keeping people for great stretches if they prove themselves year after year. If you hit a dry patch for too long, your position is in jeopardy. All creatives have dry patches. It’s one of the most stressful aspects of the job. Lucky you, going for account services. You don’t have to worry about a creative drought, per se. (On the other hand, you’ll have plenty of other crap to keep you up at night). We are the exception, staying at one agency for so long. Ogilvy has kept it interesting for us, and we’ve been fortunate enough to stay valuable to them. We’d actually suggest that especially when you’re new in the business, moving around every couple of years is advisable. Getting many perspectives and opportunities of all kinds is educational and stimulating. If you get really lucky and find a place you want to put roots down in, well, just keep doing a great job and they’ll be trying their best to keep you as long as they can. In your case, be a student of advertising (you’d be amazed by how many people working on the account services side know next to nothing about great advertsing) and do your best to help champion your agency’s best work. It will be the creatives who pull out all the stops to keep you around.
