How can a CD keep teams motivated?


I am just wondering what is the best way for a Creative Director to keep all his teams motivated. is there anything in particular you do?

intro How can a CD keep teams motivated?Keeping his or her teams motivated is a big part of the CD job. In our experience, we’ve found the number one way to do this is to keep interesting projects on everyone’s plates, not just the “stars”. So from the lowest junior on up, we’re always checking on who most needs an opportunity. For those times that opportunity seems to have gone missing, we encourage people to create their own. Do a proactive job for a client. We just lived through the big blackout of ’03. The next day people were working on a blackout related ad campaign for Timex Indiglo. While we sorted out how to find the funds to run it, the team had a great time, the client loved the attention—everybody won. Happily, no blackout is really required to think of interesting opportunities.

We encourage people to go do something inspiring and bring us the bill (ok, we’re talking reasonable bills, not a trip to Bali.). Read up, watch the new movie with the killer editing and art direction, and bring us the bill. Be sure to tell the rest of the class about the must-see event. Share the great book. Send the link to the great ad.

We encourage some creatives to direct their own spots when circumstances permit and they’re capable and interested. Another Ogilvy creative started this very site—we want him to continue to do so because it inspires him and so many others. Share the love.

Just getting out of the office is inspiring. We sometimes remind people they should go work at the coffee shop. Break out of the routine. Give yer head a shake.

And it will always be inspiring to see the newest Archive, One Show, CA—the best of the best reminds us where the bar is and is a kick in the pants.

Sending teams to Cannes or the Clios or the One Show is a great experience. In these tight times that’s been cut to the bone, but we can’t wait to resume giving people the chance to meet great creatives and learn and be inspired in those contexts.

Meanwhile—the best creatives will always seek out inspiratation in many corners. The CD can and must help, but in the end, you can always find it yourself.
