Nobody at my shop has ad biz experience


Dear Jancy, I am a recent grad from an Advertising Design program. I have found myself in the position of Coordinator for a small (but growing) Interactive Agency that has it’s sights on becoming a full agency in the future. Right now the company is experiencing growing pains and nobody quite uderstands the roles and responsibilities of each others job titles. So, some people don’t know when to hand off and to back off. I have gone to school for this stuff and I have worked in a company for 2 years running an inhouse advertising/marketing department. I want to show these guys how an agency works from the notes I took at school. Is this a good idea? Let me also point out that the people running this agency all went to school together and have no experience in advertising since they took an unrelated topic in college. The company is 3 years old and really is going to do well. But the problems in the production department are ever growing as the jobs become larger. I love working there even if the pay is not great yet…they hope to pay more than min. wage soon. So, I guess my question is two fold. Is it a good idea to take charge and show them how things could run more smoothly? and Where can I get job discriptions for everybody in a job agency? I want something other than the notes I took in class.

intro Nobody at my shop has ad biz experienceWe’re not sure why you think the prospects for these guys is great as they aspire to become an ad agency with no experience or training of any kind to do so. Doesn’t quite add up. If you’re blessed with a diplomatic touch, trying to show your employers the way can’t hurt. But they’re going to need a lot more help than you and your notes from school to learn how to become a viable ad agency. This is a baffling scenario. Maybe you’re not in over your head, but we are with this question. Good luck! (You can find agency job descriptions by calling a school like OCAD, or a sympathetic creative department manager at an ad agency may walk you through it. Don’t know where one would find a simple list, per se.)
